AYSO PHILOSOPHY

The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), a nonprofit, has been providing a world-class youth soccer program for more than fifty years based on its Six Philosophies of Everyone Plays®Balanced TeamsPositive CoachingGood SportsmanshipOpen Registration and Player Development. These six philosophies separate AYSO from other sports organizations. Built on the power of volunteer support, AYSO brings together community members to coach, referee and support their local Regions with the ultimate goal of creating a fun, family-friendly environment where your child can grow and develop not only their soccer skills but their leadership and social skills for life.

  1. Everyone Plays® - AYSO’s goal is for kids and adults to play soccer, so we mandate that every player on every team must play at least 50 percent of every game.
  2. Balanced Teams - Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible because, providing a stronger learning experience for teams as they play teams comprised of similar ability. It also allows for each player to experience playing with a wide variety of teammates of different skill levels.
  3. Open Registration - If you want to play soccer, AYSO welcomes you and gives all youth and adults the opportunity to register and play.
  4. Positive Coaching - A coach can be one of the most influential people in a player’s life, so AYSO requires they create a positive experience for every player in AYSO. Additionally, encouraging player’s effort leads to greater enjoyment, improved skills and stronger motivation in players.
  5. Good Sportsmanship - We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and our programs are designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO.
  6. Player Development - All players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, to maximize their enjoyment of the game.

KIDS ZONE

At AYSO, we want all players, coaches, families and volunteers to have fun! That’s where AYSO Kids Zone comes in. Kids Zone is a special program that encourages all in attendance, from the sidelines to the field, to use positive language, demonstrate good sportsmanship, and create a great experience and positive environment for every player. Kids Zone is a reminder that the AYSO soccer fields are a safe, friendly, happy, place for children to play and experience the joy of soccer without fear of judgement.

SAFE HAVEN/ SAFESPORT

AYSO’s Safe Haven program has been put in place to protect AYSO players and the volunteers who serve them. Under the rules of this program, AYSO requires that each volunteer complete and eSign a volunteer application each and every year, including agreeing to background checks and to abide by the philosophies and policies of AYSO. Our volunteers are also asked to complete Safe Haven courses and job-specific training in order to become certified. AYSO in-person and online training focuses on the best ways to work with children and important safety protocols. The AYSO Safe Haven program was the first of its kind in youth sports, most notably in soccer. We continually strive to create a safe environment for our players and volunteers, so they can enjoy a happy and healthy soccer experience.

Effective, January 1, 2022, U.S. Soccer has mandated SafeSport training. AYSO complies with the federal SafeSport training requirements to include the U.S. Soccer Education and Learning Center as well as their Player Health and Safety Courses. Our extensive training includes the full course in the first year and repeated courses every three years, followed by annual updates in the in-between years.
